about

i.c.a.p. is an international collaborative initiative intersecting art, performance, and inclusive discourse. With a focus on alternative structures, collaborative networks & critical discussion, i.c.a.p. aims to cultivate opportunities for international exchange.

By engaging with collective practices, creative production and audience inclusivity - i.c.a.p. aims to meet the needs for both local artists and institutions.

Our practice is grounded within a queer theoretical framework that focuses on collaborative exchange and open processes. We aim to challenge, blur and reimagine established forms of production in order to explore alternative approaches to artistic structures.

We believe that committing to dialogue and exchange is the only way to challenge the status quo of our increasingly walled-off societies. By acknowledging the political framework of the different voices that often struggle to describe our shared existences, we hope to slowly provide local audiences and art workers alike with tools to discover new and interesting international companies, contexts, collaborators, colleagues and connections.

Through a combination of our own experiences both in Norway and abroad, as well as the encouragement of BIT Teatergarasjen and Carte Blanche, i.c.a.p. was initiated to bridge current gaps between the local art scene and international networks. By cultivating international competency independently of producing institutions, we aim to support the development, dissemination and translation of works within the broader global context.

i.c.a.p. is invested in strengthening inclusive forms of art practices that are mindful of diverse and equitable frameworks through all phases of production.

The initiative is run by Danja Burchard (Hamburg), Lisa Reynolds (New York), Francesco Chiaro (Lisbon) and Elisabeth Carmen Gmeiner (Oslo).

  • After five years of Translation Studies in the two Italian leading Universities in the field, Francesco Chiaro started focusing on theater- translating and editing a collection of contemporary feminist plays from Canada, England, Australia, Mexico and the USA. Following his dissertation on the translation of Sarah Kane’s theatre in Italy, he began working for the online independent magazine Persinsala as a theatre critic.

After intense and prolific activity across Italy (covering seasonal productions, festivals, and serving as a jury member for a summer festival), he embarked on a project aimed at exploring the different languages of Performing Arts within the European framework. This led to the initiation of the international section, Staging Europa, specifically focused on the latest artistic expressions in the Old Continent (acting as editor-in-chief for Greece, Spain and, as of late, Portugal).

In addition to his continuous publications, he is currently researching inclusive theatre criticism practices in an attempt to develop a non-normative and non-hierarchical methodology capable of expanding both the reach and depth of the critical discourse on contemporary performing arts.
